As we embark on this journey, we invite you to open your mind to the endless possibilities and to consider the role we all play in shaping our electric future.

An Appreciation

As an individual of a particular age, I have developed an appreciation for Marcia Griffiths' melodic composition, "Electric Boogie (The Electric Slide)," which has consistently served as a prominent feature at countless wedding receptions and dance gatherings over the course of several decades. The fundamental essence of this song revolves around the notion of embracing life, deriving pleasure, and effortlessly immersing oneself in a rhythmic flow.

What contributes to its timeless status is the synchronized line dance that effortlessly engulfs a group of revelers, gracefully maneuvering them within a choreographed circle on the dance floor.

Now, how does this relate to equipment and maintenance, you may ask? For me, it is the resonance of a particular phrase from this song that resurfaced in my thoughts whenever I engaged in discussions pertaining to electric vehicles and the imminent challenges surrounding infrastructure: "It's electric!"

Certain Resemblances

Although it may seem like a straightforward notion, I have observed certain resemblances between the introductory lyrics and the responses I have encountered within the industry regarding electric trucks over the past year.

Last spring, during my attendance at the ACT Expo in California, I was fortunate enough to witness the unveiling of Daimler Truck North America's Freightliner eM2. This medium-duty, battery-electric truck was specifically designed for pickup and delivery applications.

Furthermore, I engaged in conversations with the company's representatives regarding the necessary infrastructure and their strategic partnerships that will facilitate a smooth transition into electrification for fleets.

While standing in California, the profound impact of electric vehicles on the trucking sector became apparent to me. However, outside of this state, skeptics and even cynics persist, raising valid concerns about energy efficiency or energy consumption and hauling capabilities, occasionally accompanied by unfounded conspiracy theories.

Yet, I discovered that these comments originate from a place where an electric truck fleet is not viewed as a viable solution, or simply put, they fail to perceive its viability. A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center revealed that there is still progress to be made in this regard.

Merely 17% of Americans express extreme or high confidence in the United States' ability to develop the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicles, while 30% show moderate confidence, and a significant 53% lack confidence altogether.

Future Prospects of Electrification

I am optimistic about the bright future prospects of electrification in our industry. The integration of electric vehicles into our transportation system is inevitable, and it will undoubtedly play a significant role in the coming years.

Major players in the sector, such as UPS, FedEx, and Schneider, have been actively embracing this transition for nearly two decades, recognizing the potential benefits or substantial benefits it offers.

Remarkably, those who have had the opportunity to ride in an electric Class 8 vehicle have become strong advocates of electrification. This is highlighted by our esteemed Equipment Perspective columnist, John Baxter, who recently visited Volvo's Sweden headquarters to experience the OEM's electric powertrain. Initially skeptical, he is now a firm believer in the vital role of electric vehicles for the advancement of our industry.

Naturally, the journey towards widespread adoption will be a gradual process. While the California Air Resources Board is currently implementing its Advanced Clean Fleets rules, there are still challenges to overcome, particularly in terms of scalability.

Nevertheless, as skeptics like Mr. Baxter gradually transition into proponents, the trucking industry will steadily embrace the electric fields slide.
